Caring for a Raw (Unsealed) Finish
Thompson classes this as a Raw finish. Left alone, it will gradually develop a soft, warm patina, so you can choose between letting it age naturally or keeping it bright.
-
Everyday: wash with mild soap and water and wipe dry to prevent water spots.
-
To keep it bright: a gentle cream such as Wright's Copper Cream removes tarnish and restores the shine. Follow with a carnauba wax (such as Flitz Wax) to slow the patina.
-
Avoid: Brasso, bleach, drain cleaner, steel wool and abrasive pads, which can scratch or strip the finish.
Want to know what to expect? Thompson founder Alejandra Ochoa de Thompson explains it in our guest post, Why Your Brass Sink Changes Color (And Why That's a Good Thing).
Thompson's Finish Guide (PDF) lists approved cleaners for every finish.

Made by Hand in Santa Clara del Cobre
Thompson's metalsmiths trained in the tradition of Santa Clara del Cobre, a mountain town in Michoacán, Mexico, where copper has been worked by hand since the 1500s. The P'urhépecha people of the region were among the most advanced metalworkers of the pre-Hispanic world, and many of today's coppersmiths are their descendants.
The traditional process is slow: the metal is heated, hammered, cooled and heated again, over and over, until the form is right. Each small dimple is the mark of a single hammer strike, which is why no two Thompson pieces are ever exactly alike.
Common Questions
Will the finish change color?
Over time it develops a soft patina. You can enjoy that aged look or restore the shine whenever you like with a gentle cream and a coat of wax. Waxing regularly and drying after use slows the change; skipping the wax lets richer antique tones develop sooner.
Why does it look uneven at first?
In the first few weeks you may see water spots or darker areas around the drain. That is normal for a raw finish, and the patina usually evens itself out within about two to four weeks.
Do I need a professional installer?
Thompson recommends that all of its sinks are installed by a licensed professional, following Thompson's installation guide (linked above). If your installer has questions about cutouts or support, we can get answers from Thompson for you.
Why might my sink look a little different from the photos?
Each piece is made by hand, so size, texture and color vary slightly from piece to piece and from the photos. Those small differences are the signature of handmade work, not a defect.
